Heat Seek

Hardware and software designed with empathy at the core.

Reliable heat data for New York tenants

Heat Seek is a nonprofit working to ensure New Yorkers have safe, warm apartments. Its temperature sensors document when landlords fail to provide adequate heat, particularly in lower-income neighborhoods where complaints are often concentrated.

Hardware and software working together

Tanooki supported Heat Seek’s hardware and software roadmap, fixed sensor reporting issues, and designed a custom circuit board with a temperature sensor and cellular communications. The web application analyzes sensor and outdoor-temperature data, records hours below the legal limit, and produces graphs and heat logs for tenants and advocates.

Ongoing support for policy and tenant advocacy

Over seven years of ongoing support, Heat Seek has been able to support more than 500 New York City families struggling to get adequate winter heat. The partnership continues to refine lower-cost devices and maintain the reporting, alerting, and data tools used by tenants and tenant advocates.
